European Marine Science Park, Building 2

Project Description

Building 2 at European Marine Science park was commissioned by Highlands and Islands Enterprises and looks to expand the site at Dunstaffnage by providing an additional 1500m2 of new office and laboratory space. Goodson Associates worked alongside Oberlanders Architects to deliver the project.

Appointed in 2019, Goodson Associates provided both civil and structural engineering designs for the project which included completion of the site infrastructure and car park extension in 2022. The main building works commenced in 2024 and were completed in 2026, with Goodsons providing support to TSL Contractors throughout the construction process.

Location: Dunstaffnage, Oban
Client: Highlands & Islands Enterprise
Value: £ 8.1 Million
Project Dates: 2026

Construction Overview

The building consists of a two-storey structure with laboratory space at first floor level and light industrial units at ground fit with vehicle access to the rear of the building. The structural frame has been designed to allow maximum flexibility in both the ground and first floor spaces, to optimise the usability of these units for future tenants.

Goodson Associates worked closely with the architect to optimise the design and shape of the building, including the careful detailing of the cantilevered entrance, lobby stairs.

Mechanical and electrical services are stored at roof level and are hidden from view by cladding panels matching the rest of the building façade. Access to the roof space and plant rooms is made via an external staircase on the west side of the building enclosed by cladded walls and a 12m mesh screen.

Despite challenging ground conditions, the design team were able to find an effective foundation solution that was able to provide a stable footing for the structure and allowing vehicular access at ground floor internal to the building.
