A deep concrete flat slab structural frame was chosen for the expansion building to assist in controlling the natural frequency of the building as any vibration to the floors could jeopardise ongoing experiments.
A light glazed steel link building was designed to bridge between the two scientific buildings and accommodates a reception space and other offices. This provides direct, column free access from the laboratories in the original and expansion element of the building allowing a collaborative research environment.
